Handel's Messiah

A bit of editorial license here.  This is not related to art or SLWS, but I want to share with you this uplifting piece, that spans all religious persuasions and may give you a boost of heart during this busy time.  Enjoy Handel's Messiah in a "Flash Mob" setting.  (A flash mob is just what you will see here; an unexpected explosion of song or other actions.)  Turn up your volume.

Jessen Kirkwood Workshop to be on TV

This is a great spot!  I recognize Carol Jessen, Jane Hogg and Rosie Phillips.  If you know others in the video, please leave a comment.  I can't determine the schedule that it will air, but check out the link to see the video.

Here is the message from the photographer, Aaron Mermelstein.

Carol:

I shot the story of you and your class painting the Kirkwood depot in May, I think, and it's been "on the shelf" for so long we had to chop the dust off of it with a pick axe.  But it's finally online and will start to air on HEC-TV (channel 989 on Charter, 98 on U-Verse), next week.

I not only have to apologize for the delay (the place works at an absolutely glacial pace), but also for my photography...this was the first one of these I shot with that teeny-tiny camera and it taught me that you CAN'T hold it in your hand without it looking like the New Madrid Fault was going crazy.  It taught me to use a tripod for later stories.

Anyway, I think it turned out pretty well and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks.

Sketching at the Zoo!

Sketchers in St. Louis are invited to participate in the global drawing marathon known as World Wide SketchCrawl #29 on Saturday, October 16. Artists are going to meet up for a day of sketching the flora and fauna at the famous Saint Louis Zoo in Forest Park. The starting point will be 10am at the entrance near the parking lot on the Hwy 40/64 side of the zoo. We will sketch until about 4pm so drop in at anytime during the day and stay as long as you like. There is no charge to enter the Zoo or be in the SketchCrawl but participants might want to bring some cash for food and frosty beverages. We will try to gather for a group photo and to compare sketches at some point later in the day but it is all intended to be casual and fun. We will also upload some of the sketches to the SketchCrawl Forum. Artists in over 70 cities throughout the world are taking part in this event; from Jakarta to Denver, from Paris to Detroit and here in St. Louis too. Over a dozen sketchers from the St. Louis Drawing and Painting Meetup have already RSVPed for the event. Everyone is welcome. Just show up with your sketchbook and get your draw on.

A message from Michael Anderson

Thank you to all members who attended the Sept meeting for their interest and very warm reception for my program on Sketch Journaling. I believe the turnout may have been the largest number of artists I have addressed at one time so far. I was really happy that several members told me they were now inspired to get out their sketchbooks and get to work. Also there was a lot interest in pens, colors, sketchbooks and the waterbrush. Artists can find more information about all these items by following the links on my website to various blogs and forums that pertain to sketching.  One of the best I can recommend is The Sketching Forum where there are links to dozens of sketch artists' sites and info about Moleskines, waterbrush, Urban Sketchers, etc. Much appreciation, Mike A
