Memorial Service and Online Auction for JoanLee Ferrara

 A message from JoanLee's daughter:

Most of you will be aware by now that on 23 January, 25 months after her initial terminal cancer diagnosis, Mom died peacefully in her sleep.  She fought a good fight and was remarkably active for much of the time she was fighting her illness, really only becoming bed-ridden in her final two weeks.

I hope as many of you as possible will join Joanlee's friends and family for a memorial mass in the chapel at Villa Duchesne, 801 S. Spoede Rd., St. Louis, 63131.  The service will be on 12 March, which would have been Mom's 71st birthday.  Please come help us to celebrate Joanlee's life and to remember her contributions to the lives of so many others.  If you're out of town, you can post something on Mom's Facebook page (I'm maintaining it until after the service) or send a reply to this message, which I can include in messages at the service.

We'll serve some light snacks and drinks afterward.  If you're thinking about coming, please let me know so I can get some sense of numbers.

Another way to show your love and support for Joanlee, and to have something wonderful to remember her by, is to bid on one of her paintings in our charity auction.  We're donating the majority of her work to Villa, with proceeds from the auction to support art education there.  You can see what's up for bid at

http://joanleeauction.blogspot.com

To bid, either put a comment on the blog under the appropriate painting, or send me an email.  Bids close at 6pm on the 12th of March.

Thanks to all of you for your support through Mom's illness.  We've dealt with the bad times.  Now let's come together to celebrate a wonderful life.

Ellen

Classes with Judy Seyfert and Jaclyn Lawson

Getting tired of winter?  The Missouri Botanical Garden is offering several art classes to help you chase away the winter doldrums. Here are some of the classes two of our members, Judy Seyfert and Jaclyn Lawson, will be teaching there this March.

Judy will be teaching  Watercolor Wisdom
(clickable link) on Friday mornings, beginning March 4th.  This class is designed to help you approach your own paintings with confidence.  Using a limited  palette, Judy will demonstrate simple techniques for making impressive paintings.  Through group and individual instruction, students will learn how to design and create their own compositions.  This class is appropriate for both beginning and intermediate students.
When: 8 Fridays:  March 4, 11, 18, 25; April 1, 8, 22, 29.  No class April 15.
Time: 9:30 a.m. till noon
Where: Missouri Botanical Garden, Kemper Classroom

Watercolor: Pure and Simple is being offered Monday evenings starting March 7.
Everywhere we look there is an inspiration for a painting.  Getting from the inspiration to the finished painting is a wonderful journey.  With this goal in mind, Judy will demonstrate how to use design and color to paint impressive watercolors.  Group and individual instruction will be given to encourage self-expression and experimentation.  Beginning or experienced watercolorists will find this a fun and exciting journey into creativity.
When: Mondays:  March 7,14 21, 28; April 4, 18. No class April 11
Time: 6;30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: Missouri Botanical Garden, Spink Pavilion

Jaclyn Lawson will be teaching,
Sketching Basics: Putting it in Perspective beginning Wednesday March 16
Don't get frustrated with the drawing basics - you can do it! In this short course, Jaclyn will demonstrate perspective and other concepts which some find difficult to understand. She will also show you many of the great sketching tools available like water soluble colored pencils, watercolor, ink, and more. Indoor plants, photographs, and other still lifes will be your subject while we wait for the thaw of spring.
When: Wednesdays March 16, 23, 30:
Time:  9:30 a.m. till Noon
Where: Missouri Botanical Garden, Kemper Classroom

For more information on these classes and others go to the Garden website,
http://www.mobot.org/ and look under education for classes for adults.    You can also call them at 577-5100.

News and a correction

For the month of March 2011, Maggie McCarthy will be an invited exhibitor at the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center, 11715 Cragwold Road, St. Louis,MO.

It turns out the painting in Palette Magazine, attributed to our Nancy Beard, is not her painting.   Apparently a publishing error.  In our phone conversation, she thought it was hers but when she got her copy of the magazine, she was very surprised.

News, News, News

Please check out the new Google Art Project at   http://www.googleartproject.com/  Click your way around to visit museums from all over the world.  You can zoom in to the most specific details, almost better than being there! Thanks to Barb Wagamon for finding this great art resource!

There is still time to sign up for Linda Green/Metzler's watercolor classes at Chesterfield Arts.  Due to the inclement weather, classes will start Feb 10, instead of Feb 3.  The lost class will be made up.  Call Chesterfield Arts or sign up on line.  (scroll down to see previous post here for details)

Super congratulations to Nancy Beard for being featured in the current issue #36 of Palette Magazine.  Her painting, Entrance and Exits, was included in this issue on painting with a neutral palette.

Happy painting and stay warm!
